Welcome all to another edition of the Miracle League of Michigan competitive baseball recap column. In what was an exciting game that went into a full extra inning in order to declare a winner, we saw a resilient Los Angeles Dodgers team who fought to the end against a powerful Detroit Tigers line up.

At the beginning of the game, we saw some excellent defensive play by the Dodgers as they stifled the Tigers, going up 10 – 0 headed into the bottom of the second inning. They were able to score so many runs off of a Travis Weinrauch Grand Slam followed by a solo shot by Tanner Roland in the first. Tanner would follow that up win a grand slam homer himself to put them even further ahead.

In the first, you had some great hitting from Mike Samueloff, Erik Plafchan and Danny Leonard who all singled setting up Weinrauch’s grand slam.

In the second inning, Brandon Pengelly, Ben Carter, Garret Winfrey all got on base for the Dodgers by hitting singles. They would also all come in as part of the five run mercy capped by Roland’s grand slam.

However, with their backs against the wall, the Tigers were able to then battle back and play some excellent baseball down the stretch.

Hailey Bocock got the Tigers started with a solo HR. This was followed up with a collaborative team effort that produced singles from Ian Edgar, Joe Rockett, Jeff Whitfield, Ian Smith, Nathan Rainey, Jerry Kaczur and Santiago Rueda who beat the tag to first to bring in the final run from third base.

The Tigers followed that up by a short top of the third with stellar defense. An excellent tag by Kaczur at third base, Smith with the tag at second and Austen Wilcox with the incredible in field pop up catch to end the inning.

The Tigers would battle all the way back to make it a 13-8 game going into the bottom of the fourth inning. If they could force a mercy, it would go to a fifth inning. And they made sure it went into extra innings by crushing the ball several times and getting those runs in.

With the 5th inning being the deciding factor, it was practically a brand new game. It could go either way, but the Tigers made it difficult on the Dodgers by only allowing one run to score. Knowing they needed two runs to win, they made some clutch hits. It was off of Rueda’s single that the tying run came in. With Nick Cross up to bat, he hit it deep to the outfield bringing in Rainey for another victory and placing them back in first place.

FYI… Nick Cross becomes the second catcher in Miracle League history to catch a pop up foul ball. He had great anticipation and tracked the ball down, throwing off his catching helmet to locate the ball better. I was unable to capture it on film, due to a technical difficulty 🙁 but I can assure you it was one of the most amazing and memorable plays we have witnessed this season. Keep it up Nick Cross!
